-i've finished "gatsby" and will be posting a review in short time.
-i've started on "the kite runner" but am only 5-6 pages in. that'll change quickly.
-my next post, in like 2 minutes, will actually be the whole list (unlinked) and the link to the list. easy reference. i'll strikethrough the titles of the books i've read and mark the ones i'm currently reading in red. and i promise i will update frequently and repost every 5-6 posts i do.

book update
as i mentioned before, i started the great gatsby. i'm not going to lie - it's been a long time since i've read a book that doesn't grab you straight out of the chute. or even a book from higher learning, so it's not going quickly.
i can say this though - i have no clue why people have been up in arms about this book. maybe there is more overt references to sex or worse language, but i haven't reached that point. i'm looking forward to finishing, hopefully by the end of the coming weekend.
but today, i left the book at work - so no reading that book tonight. because of that, i've decided to try something i haven't done in many many years. i'm going to start another book.
it was a toss up between harry potter and the half-blood prince (because of the movie and i don't remember the plot) and the kiterunner. both are on the list, so both are fair game. but i did swear to myself that i wasn't going to read all the harry potter books, so, the kiterunner by khaled hosseini it is.

50 banned books
i'm on twitter. shocking to some i'm sure, others not so much. i follow @mrskutcher and she put a link up that has a list of 50 banned books. find it here: http://bit.ly/fUDIF
my guess is that they are not all banned, but more like "the most frequently banned."
at any rate, i'm giving it a go. all 50 of them. techincally 56 if count all the harry potters.
my first will be The Great Gatsby. i'll let you know what i think vs. why it's banned.

Autism Awareness Day - 4/2/2009
World Autism Awareness Day
today is autism awareness day (4/2) and i make mention because of the little one having been given an autism diagnosis - not that we necessarily believe it anymore (more to come).
i saw an article today come across my twitter about how autism still isn't getting enough publicity. i for one, agree. *shocking* but there is also another side that i'm going to bring to light for those people that rant and rave and get all upset about autism not getting the publicity and funding and research that it rightly deserves and needs.
there is another affliction awareness coming up soon. breast cancer. anyone heard of that? i've also been touched pretty close by that movement as well. but listen up, autism-fighters. it took years for breast cancer awareness to finally hit, what i call, mainstream. it's everywhere now. a coffee stand i visit has a billboard saying "save our boobies april 6-12" - and that's not the only clever sign/advert i've seen.

autism, it seems, is the chic cause to fight for right now. i'm one of those fighters, but as one of those fighters, i also realize that it'll take some time for the word, movement, funding, etc to get a full head of steam. while diagnosis rates skyrocket, awareness will increase. us *austism-fighters* will soon see the day where the affliction will get as much pub as breast cancer or MS (as examples), it just needs to be spoken of, loudly, for just a bit longer.
as i mentioned, the little one is on the spectrum. she was just 2 when she was diagnosed and is almost 5 now. she is on track right now to enter regular school by first grade (we're putting her in a transitional kindergarten as to not overwhelm her). she speaks in full sentences, she is cognizant of others, empathetic and sympathetic and always willing to help where she can. i cannot speak enough of how important early intervention is. do it do it do it do it. if there is any question about your child, have them checked/tested. if you're scared to find out, i understand, but really think about your child and their needs. early intervention. repeat it.

a grown man's new toy
as mentioned in the last post, i have a list of things to write about. some are much more important than the others, and i fully realize that, but i want to make those worthwhile to read. not just a quick here-you-go; much like this one will be.
a good number of our wedding gifts were actual gift cards from target (we love target, a whole bunch). it was with great excitement that shortly after the wedding the playstation 3 went on special at target. not sale, but with the purchase a $50 gift card was also given. add to this the fact that we were going to portland (no sales tax) and received a 10% off coupon in the mail and the decision was set.
we decided to get the ps3 for its duel functionality. for those that don't know (all 2.3 readers), the ps3 also doubles as a blu-ray player. if you weren't aware, we're on our way to a blu-ray takeover and the normal dvd as we know it is becoming obsolete. so, a blu-ray player plus a video game console - who could ask for more? (fast-forwarding...)
this thing is flippin' awesome. the game play is out of this world and the blu-ray component is amazing. i've never seen video/graphics look any more crisp and clear. even a simple video game looks almost real. it's nice that after 2 years of owning our tv, it's finally being used in its highest function and viewing ability (more on this later).
i haven't even begun to explore the full functionality of the system (media center, files, etc) and am looking forward to playing with all of it's added toys. today, i took the first step. the ps3 has a wireless connection and is currently running off of our home setup. on my laptop today, i downloaded a program called "ps3 media server" so i can view files stored on the computer (ie, music and movies).
i've only been able to play 2 games as of now, and i think at some point i will review those. for now though, it's time to tend to the little one.

since i've last made an entry, quite a few things have happened; events that i can possibly actually write about, and just might:
-honey bunches and i have officially been married.
-i have become jobless.
-the holidays have come and gone, but the weather has stayed the same.
-i witnessed first hand how terrible pac-10 officiating is.
-the discovery of a new favorite beer has occurred.
-my belief in financial institutions has faltered, né, disappeared.
-a new president has been elected.
-i have joined a new softball team (well, 25% new).
-the mariners resigned ken griffey, jr.
-u2 has a new album.
-we purchased a ps3.
-we also purchased a roomba.
-and adopted an english bulldog.
-a new season of tv has started and with it, the acquisition of directv.
-the little one had her first haircut, not a trim, but by an actual stylist.
i'm sure there is more, but for now, that'll do. if it was any later, i'd go crack a beer and settle in. instead, i will look for a few jobs, start crafting a post from the list above, and catch up on the dvr.
